After a nine-year gap since his last release "Nightsenses" back in 2014, R-9 returns to the Body Inform label with a new EP. The label's concept of focusing on "the physicality of techno music" remains unchanged, but the new EP, which is strongly influenced by the "Grey Area" style of Presha, Sam KDC, and ASC, is a new musical experiment in a studio that has been completely redesigned. It extends to the production level the natural layering of 127.5bpm 3/4 time techno and 170bpm to 85bpm deep drum'n'bass that has already been introduced in R-9's DJ work over the past few years.

The title track, "Code Grey" is a hypnotic, rough noise swell with a heavy kick that slowly builds and breaks into an even, 3x4 raw techno groove. The B-side "Prism" similarly presents a Grey Area motif with transparent synth pads in the first half before switching to 135bpm heavy straight techno in the second half. The final track, "Bipolar Dub" is a multi-layered half-time dnb piece with dubby bass that creates a meditative, hallucinatory atmosphere.

Body Inform plans to continue releasing new EPs in 2024.

前作"Nightsenses"から9年間の空白を経て、R-9の新作がBody Informレーベルに帰ってきた。テクノ音楽の身体性にこだわるというレーベルコンセプトはそのままに、ソフト・ハードともに一新されたスタジオにおいて、音楽的にも新たな試みが行われている。Presha、Sam KDC、ASCの提唱する"Grey Area"に強い影響を受けた本作は、既にR-9のここ数年間のDJにおいて導入されていた、127.5bpmの3/4拍子テクノと170bpmないし85bpmのディープ・ドラムンベースとの自然なレイヤリングを、プロダクション・レベルにまで拡張したものである。

タイトル曲"Code Grey"は、ヒプノティックでざらついたノイズのうねりのなかを重いキックがゆっくりと叩き、ブレイクを経て、やがてイーブンな3拍子のロウ・テクノ・グルーヴへと誘う。B面の"Prism"でも同様に、前半ではGrey Areaモチーフを使った主題が透明感のあるシンセパッドとともに提示されるが、後半の展開部では一転して135bpmの縦ノリのテクノへとスイッチする。最後の"Bipolar Dub"は、ダビーな低音が瞑想的で幻惑的な空気を生む、多層構造のハーフタイム・ドラムンベース。

Body Informは、2024年も引き続き新作EPのリリースを予定している。
